Why Netflix blocks NordVPN in the first place

Netflix doesn't hate VPNs — it has licensing agreements with studios that restrict which content can be shown in which countries. When you use a VPN, Netflix sees an IP address from a data center rather than a residential address, which flags it as a potential proxy.

Netflix maintains a blocklist of known VPN server IPs and updates it constantly. This is why a server that worked yesterday might not work today — your specific server IP got added to the list. It's not a problem with NordVPN itself. It's a cat-and-mouse game that NordVPN actively manages.

✓ Good to know

Netflix doesn't ban accounts for VPN use. It blocks access to specific content libraries when it detects a VPN IP. Switching to a different server — same country, different IP — usually resolves it immediately.

Fix 1 — Switch to a different server (try this first)

This is the fix that works most of the time. Netflix is blocking a specific server IP, not NordVPN as a whole. Switching to a different server in the same country gives you a fresh IP that may not be on the blocklist yet.

Fix 2 — Clear your browser cache and cookies

Netflix stores your location data in cookies. If you've previously browsed Netflix without a VPN, your browser might be serving cached content that contradicts your new VPN location.

Fix 3 — Change your VPN protocol

Different VPN protocols produce different traffic signatures. If Netflix is identifying your connection as a VPN based on traffic patterns, switching protocols can help.

Protocol Works with Netflix Speed Notes
NordLynx Best Fastest Try this first — default for most users
OpenVPN TCP Good Moderate More stable on weak connections
OpenVPN UDP Sometimes Fast Try if TCP is too slow
IKEv2 Sometimes Fast Worth trying if NordLynx fails

To change protocol on mobile: Settings → VPN Protocol → select NordLynx. On desktop: Settings → Connection → VPN Protocol.

Fix 4 — Disable IPv6

This one catches people off guard. If your device uses IPv6 and your VPN tunnel only covers IPv4, Netflix can see your real IPv6 address alongside your VPN IPv4 address — and flag it as a mismatch.

On most devices you can disable IPv6 in your network settings. On Windows: Control Panel → Network Connections → your wifi adapter → Properties → uncheck "Internet Protocol Version 6." On Mac: System Settings → Network → your connection → Details → TCP/IP → Configure IPv6 → Off.

⚠ Check this if nothing else works

IPv6 leaks are one of the less obvious causes of Netflix detection. NordVPN's desktop apps handle this automatically, but the setting can sometimes get misconfigured after a system update.

Fix 5 — Contact NordVPN support

NordVPN's 24/7 live chat support actively monitors which servers are working with Netflix in real time. If you've tried the above and nothing works, this is your fastest path to a working server.

Tell them: which country's Netflix library you're trying to access, which device you're on, and which protocol you're using. They'll point you to a specific server that's currently working.

✓ Save this for travel

If you're traveling to a country where Netflix content differs — China blocks it entirely, other countries have different libraries — set up your server at home before you leave. Support is reachable at nordvpn.com/contact-us.

Frequently asked questions

No. Netflix blocks access to certain content libraries when it detects a VPN IP, but it doesn't ban accounts. There are no documented cases of Netflix account bans for VPN use. The worst that happens is you see a proxy error and can't access geo-restricted content until you switch servers.

Netflix constantly updates its blocklist of known VPN IPs. A server that worked yesterday might be blocked today — and a blocked server might get a new IP and work again tomorrow. NordVPN rotates server IPs to stay ahead of this, which is why switching servers usually fixes the problem.

Yes — the same fixes apply on iOS and Android. Switch servers, clear the Netflix app cache (Settings → Apps → Netflix → Clear Cache on Android; delete and reinstall on iOS), and make sure NordVPN is connected before opening the Netflix app.

No — Netflix's ad-supported tier blocks VPNs entirely, regardless of which VPN you use. This is a Netflix policy, not a NordVPN limitation. You need a Standard or Premium Netflix plan for VPN access to work.
