The short answer — and why it's complicated
China's Great Firewall is the most sophisticated internet censorship system in the world. It doesn't just block websites — it actively detects and disrupts VPN traffic in real time. Standard VPN protocols get identified and blocked within seconds of connecting.
NordVPN works in China, but only because of a specific feature: obfuscated servers. These disguise your VPN traffic to look like regular HTTPS web traffic. The Firewall's detection systems see what appears to be a normal encrypted connection to a web server — not a VPN — and let it through.
⚠ Critical — read before you travel
The App Store and Google Play are blocked in China. You cannot download NordVPN, update it, or change its settings after you arrive. Everything must be set up and tested before you leave home. This is the most common mistake travelers make.

How China's Great Firewall detects VPNs
Understanding why most VPNs fail in China helps you understand why obfuscation works. The Firewall uses several techniques simultaneously:
Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) — The Firewall analyzes the structure of your internet traffic. Standard VPN protocols like OpenVPN have recognizable signatures — specific patterns in how data is packaged and sent — that DPI can identify in milliseconds.
IP blocklists — Known VPN server IP addresses are added to blocklists rapidly. Commercial VPN providers are in a constant arms race to maintain usable server IPs.
Behavioral analysis — Even if the payload is encrypted, traffic patterns (timing, volume, frequency) can reveal VPN usage. The Firewall's machine learning systems have been trained on millions of VPN connections.
Obfuscation defeats DPI by wrapping VPN traffic inside what looks like standard TLS web traffic. From the Firewall's perspective, you appear to be browsing a normal HTTPS website.

Step-by-step: set up NordVPN for China before you leave
✓ Do this at home — not at the airport
This entire setup takes about 10 minutes. Do it at least a day before you travel so you have time to troubleshoot if anything goes wrong.
- Download NordVPN on every device you're bringing. iPhone, Android, laptop — all of them. The app is available on the App Store and Google Play while you're outside China. After arrival, you can't download it.
- Open the app and go to Settings → VPN Protocol. Switch from "Recommended" to NordLynx or OpenVPN (TCP). Both work with obfuscation; NordLynx is faster.
- Enable obfuscated servers. In settings, find "Advanced" or "Obfuscated servers" and toggle it on. The server list will update to show only obfuscated-capable servers.
- Connect to an obfuscated server and test it. Try loading Google, YouTube, and Instagram to confirm it's working. Do this before you travel.
- Enable "Auto-connect" on untrusted networks. This ensures the VPN activates automatically when you connect to hotel or airport wifi in China.
- Save NordVPN's customer support contact. If something stops working in-country, you'll need to reach support. Their chat is accessible through the VPN — save the URL before you go.
Which protocol works best in China?
| Protocol | Works in China | Speed | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|---|
| NordLynx + obfuscation | YES | Fast | Best overall — use this first |
| OpenVPN TCP + obfuscation | YES | Moderate | More stable on poor connections |
| OpenVPN UDP + obfuscation | SOMETIMES | Fast | Try if TCP is slow |
| OpenVPN (standard) | NO | — | Blocked by Firewall |
| IKEv2 | NO | — | Blocked by Firewall |

What to do if NordVPN stops working in China
The Firewall is not static — it's actively updated, and VPN providers occasionally get disrupted, especially around politically sensitive dates (national holidays, anniversaries). Here's what to try if your connection drops:
- Switch servers. Open the server list and connect to a different obfuscated server. Some IPs get temporarily blocked while others remain clear.
- Switch protocol. If NordLynx stops working, try OpenVPN TCP. The different packet structure sometimes bypasses whatever blocking is in effect.
- Try a different network. Hotel wifi and local SIM cards are treated differently by the Firewall. If hotel wifi is blocked, try your mobile data — or vice versa.
- Contact NordVPN support. Their 24/7 live chat can suggest specific servers that are currently working in your region of China. They monitor this actively.
Is using a VPN in China legal?
This is the question everyone asks and no one gives a straight answer to. Here's the honest version:
Technically, only government-approved VPNs are legal in China. Unapproved VPNs — which includes all consumer VPN services like NordVPN — exist in a legal grey area. There are no documented cases of foreign tourists being prosecuted or fined for personal VPN use. The enforcement focus is on Chinese citizens and businesses, not visitors.
That said: we are not lawyers, and this is not legal advice. The situation can change, and you're subject to Chinese law while in China. Most travelers use VPNs without incident. You'll need to make your own decision about the risk.
